Overview

XMUSM has a long history of internationalization. As early as the 1980s, with the approval of the then State Education Commission (now the Ministry of Education), XMU became one of the eight universities in China to participate in the China-Canada Management Education Programme (CCMEP) under the auspices of both the Chinese and Canadian governments. XMU established academic exchanges in modern business administration with Dalhousie University and Saint Mary’s University. Between 1983 and 1992, XMU sent over 70 faculty members to Canadian universities’ business Schools for research, as visiting scholars, or to complete a degree programme. Upon completion of their study, they returned to revolutionize XMU business education as they incorporated the newly learned course structure, advanced teaching methodology and influential textbooks into their teaching.

During the 1990s, the School sent 30 core faculty members in three sessions to Newcastle University, UK, to improve their English language competence, which in turn helped facilitate their international academic exchanges. Over the ensuing years, XMUSM also chose more than 57 faculty members for studies in the business schools of reputed universities, including Cornell University and Northwestern University in the US, McGill University in Canada, and Lancaster University in the UK; most of these faculty later became department heads or centre directors. The School also emphasizes learning case method pedagogy. In 2005, XMUSM co-operated with McGill University in the “China-Canada University-Industry Partnership Program” in case teaching. In 2007, XMUSM co-operated with Harvard Business School to host the CWCD program. In 2012, XMUSM co-operated with Richard Ivey School of Business, the University of Western Ontario in case teaching. Since 2006, the School has sent 32 faculty members to Harvard Business School to participate in “Program on Case Method and Participant-Centered Learning (PCMPCL)” and “Global Colloquium on Participant-Centered Learning (GCPCL)”.

The School also actively promotes business education internationalization and has established such joint programmes as: the Bachelor of International Accounting Programme with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), UK; 1+1 EMBA Joint Programme with Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University, USA, Edinburgh University, UK, McGill University, Canada; Joint Programme in Accounting with University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC), USA; 1+1 Joint Programme in Finance with Tulane University USA. In 2011, to meet the demand for entrepreneurship, and to promote education in this area, XMUSM signed an agreement with Babson College in the US, and became Babson’s sole strategic partner in China as well as a member of Babson’s GCEE Forum. XMUSM also signed an agreement with UIUC, USA to launch a summer school programme. At the same time, to promote exchanges with universities in Hong Kong and Taiwan, XMUSM has established close ties with such universities as the National Taiwan University, the National Chengchi University, Tsinghua University (Taiwan), the National Chiao Tung University, the National Sun Yat-Sen University, Chengkong University, and Chonghsing University, Hong Kong University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong University of Science and Engineering. Undergraduate, MBA/EMBA exchanges and Faculty, Ph.D. academic co-operations have been ever increasing. XMUSM, in fact, has had the most frequent exchanges with Taiwan, compared with other universities in the mainland. Currently, the School has had regular exchanges and co-operations with more than 65 top universities in the world.
